How I chose the best selling items on Etsy

I based our ranking recommendations on these key data points we gathered from Alura, a product research tool for Etsy sellers.

  • Search volume (popularity): The average number of monthly searches for the product keyword on Etsy. Search volume indicates demand for the product — it tells how many shoppers are searching for this keyword. It also shows the historical search trend for a specific keyword.
  • Conversion rate (profitability): This measures the average conversion rate for listings with the keyword. It refers to the number of visitors who turn into customers. The average conversion rate on Etsy is 2% to 3%. Anything higher than this is considered a profitable and in-demand product.
  • Competition (market saturation): This refers to the number of competing listings for the keyword on Etsy. Alura’s tool directly connects to Etsy to get the total number of listings for the keyword. The less competition, the better!

I took into consideration the three data points above and made my own ranking. First, we ranked popular keywords by search volume (with the first rank going to the keyword with the highest search volume), competition (with the least competitive keyword getting the first rank), and conversion rate (the highest conversion rate gets first place).

Then I took the average from these individual rankings. I also considered Alura’s built-in score and compared it with our results.
