Here’s a confession from a digital marketer: I love direct mail. And it turns out, 92% of customers prefer them too, even more than digital marketing. Direct mail services can engage your audience for long periods of time and really make your business memorable.
Unlike digital ads or content, it isn’t ephemeral, and it’s been proven to increase website traffic, foot traffic, and sales.
You probably already know that going around town and distributing your direct mail by hand isn’t the best use of time and money. That’s where direct mailing services come in. They’ll help design attention-grabbing mail, then print and send it out for you at your chosen locations.
Bonus points if they provide analytics and cross-channel campaigns. I looked at the best direct mail marketing services for small businesses and ranked them by cost, features, and quality of service.
Are direct mail services still relevant in 2025?
A hundred percent! I’d forgive you for thinking that direct mail is all but gone in the digital age, but funnily enough, that’s the very reason they’re so effective. With screens and ads everywhere, digital fatigue is real among today’s audiences, which is why they’re responding to real-life brand experiences more. Can’t say I’m surprised.
Beyond that, though, direct mail marketing is especially effective for reaching local audiences. Nothing says “tight-knit community” quite like a physical greeting card in your audience’s mailbox, certainly not a Facebook post or another ad. Studies have found that up to 76% of consumers find direct mail more trustworthy. They have a longer staying power, too. 48% of audiences retain direct mail for future reference.
Direct mail services let you design and print direct mail marketing materials (and other printed promotional materials) and have them delivered to your door. These materials can include brochures, flyers, booklets, or even marketing swag like magnets and custom apparel.
Most services also have Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) services, which partner with the US Postal Service to send direct mail to every address in a specific ZIP code to grow your local presence.
Overview of the best direct mail services
VistaPrint: Overall best direct mail service
Pros
- Online drag-and-drop design platform with plenty of modern templates
- Low minimum order quantities (25 for postcards, 200 for EDDM)
- Plenty of mailing materials: postcards, brochures, flyers, menus, etc.
- Free shipping for large orders or longer delivery times
Cons
- Only does delivery for EDDM postcards
- Fastest turnaround is two business days
My expert opinion
VistaPrint is always my go-to for any type of printed marketing material because of the sheer variety it has on offer: postcards, brochures, catalogs — you name it. And it consistently delivers high-quality designs and print results, the kind that show you’re a reputable, high-quality business.
I particularly like that its online design editor gives plenty of design freedom with plenty of templates to start with. VistaPrint is often my number one alternative to people who want Canva’s design platform but with more trustworthy printing services.
The one drawback with VistaPrint is that it only offers mailing services for postcards. So if your campaign involves anything more (like brochures or booklets), you’ll need to mail them yourself.
However, no matter the size of your business, VistaPrint is still our best direct mailing service for postcard marketing campaigns, especially if you prioritize good design. It provides everything you need in one place, including mailing lists and design services, at an affordable price and with postage discounts.
It’s also ideal for designing and printing other materials, such as brochures, catalogs, business cards, flyers, and branded promotional assets for your small business.
PostcardMania: Best for cost-efficient cross-channel campaigns
Pros
- Everywhere Small Business feature integrates direct mail with Meta, Google, and YouTube ads for cross-channel campaigns
- Tracks delivered mails and the clicks, phone calls, and landing page visits they generate
- Provides 1,000 free postcards for EDDM campaigns
- Offers direct mail for Shopify cart abandonment
Cons
- Only prints postcards, flyers, brochures, and door hangers (different sizes available)
- No design customization options, only fixed templates
- Limits the use of residential mailing lists to three times in 90 days
- Seven business-day turnaround time
My expert opinion
PostcardMania offers some of the cheapest printing costs overall. But what makes it stand out among other direct mailing marketing services is its Everywhere Small Business cross-channel campaigns.
It combines direct mail with Google and social media ads and even retargets website visitors and cart abandonments in your Shopify store. It’s a cost-efficient option for combining direct mail with cross-channel and remarketing campaigns.
For example, you can match the IP address of anonymous visitors to your website and automatically send a follow-up mailer. Likewise, PostcardMania will automatically send postcards as part of your Shopify cart abandonment strategy or to people who interact with your digital ads online. Their new-in-town (targeting recent move-ins) and EDDM campaigns are great features for local direct mail campaigns.
The process is also simple: Choose a postcard template, upload your own design, or hire a PostcardMania designer, and the team will handle all the mailing for you. Unfortunately, PostcardMania doesn’t have online design tools, so once you choose a design template, you can only customize it with your info. You can’t edit it any further, which can limit your design options.
Still, PostcardMania is the best choice for integrating direct mail with digital marketing channels, simply ordering in bulk, or building your brand presence across multiple channels.
PsPrint: Best for a wide variety of mailer types
Pros
- Print postcards, brochures, flyers, booklets, and more — 60 products in total
- All products (except EDDM postcards) start at 50 minimum orders
- Plenty of paper stock and coating options
- One to five business days turnaround time
Cons
- Only delivers postcards
- Very outdated design templates
- Not a user-friendly online design platform
My expert opinionPricing
PsPrint offers printing and mailing services for seven mailer types: postcards, brochures, greeting cards, invitations, booklets, catalogs, and newsletters, which is more than most other direct mailing services, making it a good option if your marketing plan includes multiple campaigns beyond just EDDM postcards.
PsPrint also offers regular printing services for dozens of other marketing products like newsletters, stickers, and magnets, as well as EDDM services. It also has a design tool. But be aware that you’ll be working with a very slow, laggy platform, even if you’re just using drag-and-drop, which makes designs look stuck in 2005. (Seriously, I do not recommend using it.) Come prepared with your own design for best results (and your own sanity).
On the bright side, turnaround times for printing are five days at most, and you can choose between one and five days — although a one-day turnaround costs nearly twice as much as a five-day turnaround. Still, with its many design templates, it can be a worthwhile investment if you have multiple direct mail campaigns planned.
*Costs increase for faster turnaround times
48HourPrint: Best for fast EDDM services
Pros
- Provides next-day printing and EDDM services
- EDDM postcards have gloss or matte options and four sizes, all USPS-approved
- Drag-and-drop design editor available
Cons
- Very basic design elements
- No design team for custom designs
My expert opinion
48HourPrint’s biggest asset is speed. As its name promises, it has turnaround times of one to five days. This includes EDDM campaigns, where the team will also mail your postcards to your chosen ZIP code, even as quickly as the following day. Although, as usual, costs increase for quicker turnarounds.
Like PsPrint, you can design your own mailer online using the online design platform, which also has a stock image library. However, it’s also not the most intuitive platform, so I, once again, recommend coming with your design prepared. Not all stock photos are free as well, and the other available design elements are very basic monoline shapes.
Surprisingly, there’s a QR code generator, so I’m obliged to give it an extra point. It also has a decent variety of mailer types, paper stock, and finish options. But its best use case is still for quick and reliable EDDM campaigns.
*Costs increase for faster turnaround times
**Price is for a one-day turnaround, the only available turnaround for flyers.
NextDayFlyers: Best for same-day printing
Pros
- Offers same-day printing for orders before 10 a.m. (next-day for orders before 6 p.m.)
- Great for rush EDDM campaigns
- Wide variety of mailing materials (postcards, brochures, booklets, etc.)
Cons
- Costs increase for same-day or next-day printing
- Very basic and outdated designs with almost no customization
- No premium paper stock options
- No delivery services aside from EDDM postcards
My expert opinion
NextDayFlyers has a pretty wide range of printed marketing materials, but unfortunately, it only offers delivery services for its EDDM postcards. If you want to deliver other mailer types, like flyers, brochures, and business cards, you’ll need to have them delivered via a separate service.
On the plus side — and the reason it’s one of the best direct mail services — it offers same- or next-day printing for all its products. If you place your order by 10 a.m., you can almost always have your materials by the same afternoon. Or if you place it by 6 p.m., it’ll be ready the following day. It’s the best choice if speed is your top priority and you already have a final, press-ready design.
I don’t recommend using NextDayFlyer’s design templates, as they’re not exactly the most eye-catching or modern (think Microsoft Office 2007-core with grade-schoolish illustrations), with very limited customizations. Basically, you can only change colors and orientations. But if you already have your own design and just need somewhere to print it fast, this is a good option.
*Additional costs apply for same-day or next-day printing
PostGrid: Best automated direct mail service for bulk mail
Pros
- The only automated direct mail service so far
- Automates transactional mailers like invoices and checks
- Offers advanced direct mail analytics
- Integrates with over 1,600 customer relationship management (CRM) tools
Cons
- Automation API takes time to install
- Very basic mail designs
- Only mails out postcards, letters, and transactional pieces
My expert opinion
PostGrid is unique for having a fully automated direct mail service. It uses online software to automatically send postcards, letters, or even checks to a mailing list you input, and tracks them individually using tracking codes.
As such, it’s the best option for running multiple or ongoing direct mail campaigns with large mailing lists. You can even integrate your campaigns with your CRM system to help track your leads and response rates.
Being an advanced platform, however, it’s not something I’d recommend if you’re just starting out with direct mail services. The API takes some time and technical know-how to set up — not something you can do in 30 minutes, compared to something like VistaPrint and PostcardMania.
It’s definitely a unique service, though, which is primarily why it’s on my list. It’ll be most helpful for businesses with a large mailing list or that need to automate sending checks or bills to customers.
Another limitation is that its design platform is pretty basic and can only do text and image replacement, surprisingly. It’s not something you’d go to for branded, eye-catching designs. However, if highly sophisticated and automated direct mail campaigns are the focus of your business, PostGrid could be an ideal choice.
It automates the personalization, printing, and delivery of your mailers for fast and accurate campaigns, and its tracking and analytics are unparalleled.
Smartpress: Best for premium-quality mail that stands out
Pros
- Everything is automatically printed on high-quality paper stock
- Plenty of options for paper quality, size, ink, and finish
- Low minimum orders (25 or 50, depending on the product)
Cons
- No design platform or templates
- No rush printing
- No EDDM or delivery services
My expert opinion
With Smartpress, print quality is the name of the game. If you want your mailers to look and feel more special than others, Smartpress is the go-to. For example, you can choose from six different paper stocks — all premium quality — and between black or full-color printing for postcards.
Aside from postcards, you can also print and mail booklets, newsletters, self-mailers, and letters with or without envelopes. For print-only services, you can choose from dozens of other products, including brochures, business cards, booklets, and calendars.
As mentioned, everything is automatically printed on premium paper stock, so it’s a good choice for sending loyalty program invites or important letters to clients or for creating branded merch like notepads or bookmarks.
The biggest downside with Smartpress and the reason why it’s so much lower on this list is that it doesn’t have an in-house design platform or design team, so all your designs should be ready for uploading. But if you’re willing to pay the extra cost for a premium product that’ll give your brand a more sophisticated feel, Smartpress is my best pick.
Taradel: Best for targeted direct mail campaigns
Pros
- Target audiences by age, income level, and home ownership
- Combines direct mail with digital ads
- Offers B2C and B2B direct mailing
Cons
- Only mails out postcards
- No rush print orders, all orders take between two and four business days
- High minimums (1,000) for EDDM postcards and flyers
- Limited variety — doesn’t print brochures, booklets, or letterheads
My expert opinion
Taradel’s standout feature is its targeted direct mail campaigns, which let you target a group of customers by industry, geography, or financial metric. This is its most unique feature by far, and it lets you combine your direct mail campaigns with digital ads, like PostcardMania, even on platforms like Hulu and Spotify. There’s also a platform for tracking your campaign analytics.
However, Taradel’s direct mail services are also pretty limited. It only offers mailing services for postcards, and it doesn’t print brochures or booklets — just flyers (and door signs, business cards, yard signs, and magnets, which don’t really count as mail).
The design platform is also a basic drag-and-drop with some generic templates to get started, but resizing options are limited. It’s not the best platform, but it’s a usable one, especially if you want something more targeted than your basic EDDM mail campaign.
*Price for a 4.25×11-inch postcard; larger sizes are also available
Mail Shark: Best for automated weekly direct mail campaigns
Pros
- Sends direct mail weekly to keep your brand top-of-mind
- Full-service direct mail company that plans, prints, and delivers your mail for you
- Sends a variety of direct mail, including postcards, scratch-offs, and brochures tailored to your industry
Cons
- Designs can be generic, not unique to your business
- Limited control over your mail content
- Doesn’t show the total cost until after your campaign ends
- Seven- to 10-day turnaround
My expert opinion
Mail Shark is a little different. It offers industry-specific direct mailing services, and it sends mail weekly to continuously engage your audience. In a way, it’s like hiring a direct mailing service to prepare, print, and deliver your direct mail campaigns for you over a number of weeks.
You select the number of postcards to send and the number of weeks, and the Mail Shark team will spread them out and deliver them to your desired locations for you.
It’s certainly a convenient way to outsource your direct mail campaigns and will be helpful for many busy business owners, but my main concern is that you don’t get much control over the look and design of your mailers.
Since everything will be handled by the Mail Shark team, there’s the risk of your mailers looking generic and not fully branded — not ideal if your business has a strong brand identity to promote.
Mail Shark’s services are more suitable if memorability via consistency is what you’re shooting for — for example, if you’re only looking to raise awareness and interest in your business by consistently showing up in your audience’s mailbox. But it’s still a convenient way to send out mailers and build your brand presence in your local area.
MailShark offers custom weekly direct mail prices for each business. The following prices are estimated starting costs for the industries it serves.

How I evaluated the best direct mail services
The top direct mailing services all offer basic printing for various mailers, but not all have the same design customization level, range of mailer materials, or even the same paper stocks and quality.
To create this guide, I put together a set of criteria and evaluated the best services by their pricing, general features, advanced features, customer support, and my own evaluation as a marketer.
30%
General direct mail features
25%
Niche direct mail features
20% of Overall Score
For pricing, I evaluated the base cost for 100 postcards, as well as the smallest order quantity available, and whether or not they offer discounts for bulk orders.
30% of Overall Score
This criterion involves all the basic capabilities every direct mailing service should have, like EDDM services, design tools and services, a good variety of direct mail materials, and a turnaround time of a few days at most.
25% of Overall Score
Aside from the basic capabilities, I also gave extra credit to platforms with extra tools and features, like a QR code generator, premium paper stocks, campaign analytics, multichannel campaigns, and in-house mailing lists.
15% of Overall Score
Good customer support is valuable in any printing service, so I also took it into account in my scoring. This particularly includes whether each platform offered 24/7 support, and how many support avenues it had (live chat, phone, and an online help center with instructions).
10% of Overall Score
I also tested each platform myself and tried to design and order postcards to test the quality of its service. My expert evaluation includes its overall features, design and print quality, and value for money.

Things to consider when choosing the best direct mailing service
The first step in finding the best direct mail service for your business is assessing your priorities. For example, some offer one-day turnaround times but cost more than average, so they’re the best option if you value time over cost.
Some providers have built-in design platforms or offer design services if you need help. Others still focus on print quality over cost for a high-end presentation for your brand.
This is why assessing your needs is crucial before choosing your service. Also important are your audience, budget, design vision, reporting capabilities, and integrations.
- Cost: Based on my budget and desired return on investment, does this provider align with my financial goals?
- Delivery speed: How quickly can the provider get my direct mailer campaigns printed and sent?
- Audience: Does the provider offer EDDM services or the ability to buy a mailing list, or do I need to have a list ready to upload?
- Design: How easy are the platform’s editing tools, and are design templates available? If not, does it offer design services?
- Reporting: How do I know how many pieces were delivered successfully? Does the provider offer any post-campaign analytics so I can calculate the return on my investment?
- Integrations: Do I need to coordinate direct mail campaigns with campaigns on other channels like email, social media, digital advertising, ecommerce, and so on?
- Added value: Does the provider offer other printing or marketing services beyond direct mail? Do I need an all-in-one solution or ways to automate future mailings?
Once you’ve answered these questions, review the providers to see which best matches your needs. Doing this helps you choose a service that is not only reliable and effective but also prioritizes your specific needs.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
A good example of a direct mail campaign is an Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) postcard, which is a type of marketing postcard sent to every address in a certain ZIP code. Other examples are flyers you might receive in your mailbox from your local restaurant or other local establishments. Many local businesses also offer coupons as direct mail marketing materials to entice new customers to try their products or services.
One of the most common direct mail services is Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) services. These use the USPS to deliver promotional postcards to every door in a certain area (hence their name) and are widely used by many small and local businesses.
However, some platforms automate direct mail delivery, like Mail Shark, or you can also deliver direct mail yourself via the US Postal Service. Aside from postcards and flyers, other common direct mail materials are brochures, booklets, and catalogs.
The cheapest way to send direct mail is through the US Postal Service’s EDDM service, where costs start at 2 cents per mailpiece (as of June 2025). For example, sending EDDM postcards to a single route in ZIP code 37211 in Nashville will require 817 mailpieces and cost $182.19, according to the USPS website.
Or, if you’re willing to deliver your mail yourself to your local neighborhood, VistaPrint offers standard postcards at $12.99 for 25 postcards, which will be shipped to your door.
Bottom line
Direct mail services are a great way to reach and engage a local audience, especially if you have a brick-and-mortar business with a local audience. The best services, like the ones above, offer a good variety of printed mailer materials, a quick turnaround, and some delivery services. Use them to build direct mail campaigns that get people interested in your business and build your local presence.
